Kamla: Support struggling mothers

She made the call in her Mother’s Day message yesterday.

“We must also keep in our thoughts and prayers those mothers who may be struggling - the single parents, women who may have recently lost their jobs, and those who may be juggling work, family and the pursuit of higher education. Given the economic downturn we are currently facing in our country, many women are finding it harder to get by, to be able to provide for their families. I ask you to do what you can to be your sister’s keeper, and I call on the Government to ensure that mothers who may be experiencing hardship are given the assistance they need.” She said for Mother’s Day, “we pause to recognize their important role in our society, especially with regard to instilling in our children the values that will help them grow into productive citizens.” “Mothers are the ones we tend to turn to for words of comfort and advice, and we should value them every day of the year.” Persad-Bissessar said as the nation celebrates these remarkable women she is also mindful of those who have lost their mothers.

“I cherish the memory of my own mother, who played an integral role in moulding me into the person I am today. I take time every day to honour the immeasurable impact she has had on my life.” She also advised those who have lost their loved ones “to think of other women in your lives who may have provided guidance or encouragement, or acted as mentors, and show your appreciation for them.” She said that today “we recognize the enormous contributions of our nation’s mothers. Their unconditional love, understanding and strength should serve as inspiration for all of us to do better, to become better citizens.”
