Emailgate investigator dies

He leaves to mourn his widow Lystra Bridgelal, a police sergeant, and his son. Nanan, 59, worked until Tuesday at the Police Complaints Division, which he headed for the past two weeks.

On Wednesday, he complained of feeling unwell and was taken to the Southern Medical Centre where he began bleeding from the nose and it was found he had a blood clot in his head. Relatives were told to take him to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with bleeding in the brain as a result of a ruptured vein.

He never regained consciousness and died early yesterday.

Nanan joined the police 38 years ago. He worked for several years at the Organised Crime, Narcotics and Firearms Bureau and was responsible for several major drug busts, including cocaine found in a container of frozen cassava in the Freeport area. He also worked at Port-of-Spain CID, the Eastern Division and the Highway and Traffic Branch.

Two weeks ago he was suddenly transferred to the Police Complaints Division a move which did not meet with his approval but a task he nevertheless undertook.

In 2013, now retired Deputy Commissioner of Police Mervyn Richardson asked Nanan to head the emailgate investigation team.

Three weeks ago, Nanan submitted his final findings to Acting Commissioner of Police Stephen Williams. The findings were then handed over to Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions (South) Joan Honor? Paul and asked for a meeting, for her final decision.

In 2013, then Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley presented copies of e-mails in Parliament alleging wrongdoing on the part of then Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and three of her ministers.

Wrongdoing included a plot to kill a journalist.

The matter was referred by Persad- Bissessar to the police, DPP Roger Gaspard as well as the Integrity Commission.

Yesterday, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Irwin Hackshaw said Nanan’s passing was a big loss to the service. He described Nanan as an experienced officer who was hard-working, dedicated, passionate, well-liked and highly respected by his colleagues.
