Attorney charged with drunk driving

Dave Maharaj, 50, of London Street, San Fernando was arrested on Monday in Marabella at about 6 pm.

He appeared yesterday in the Traffic Court, before Magistrate Natalie Diop, who read the charge to him that on Monday, he drove a vehicle while the alcohol in his breath exceeded the legal limit – 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath – by 155 microgrames.

Maharaj pleaded not guilty and his attorney Ainsley Lucky, asked the magistrate to grant bail. Magistrate Diop asked Lucky what his client’s occupation was and he replied, “He’s an attorney, your worship.” Lucky said Maharaj has no previous conviction except a pending maintenance case.

Court prosecutor Sgt Kassieram Lutchman did not object to bail.

Magistrate Diop granted Maharaj own bail in the sum of $500 and fixed August 11, as the date when a trial date will be set.

As Maharaj left the courthouse, he took off his white shirt and placed it over his head to avoid being photographed.
