Reconvene reparations committee
In a release yesterday, NJAC noted the committee was launched in keeping with a decision made by Caricom leaders at the 34th Regular Caricom Heads of Government meeting in July 2013. The committee was formed to seek reparations for slavery and the genocide of native peoples from European countries.
However, the organisation said with the change of Government in September 2015, the committee has ceased to function.
“NJAC is of the firm view that this committee is too critical to the future stability and development of Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean region to be allowed to exist at the whims and fancies of any political directorate. The issue of reparations transcends the political divide and all other social barriers that may exist, including race, gender, wealth or religion,” the release stated.
NJAC urged the Government to support other Caricom states in giving full support towards the implementation of the Ten Point Plan as outlined by the Caricom Reparations Commission.
