Policewoman still on duty

According to reports, a confrontation between the driver and the police wrecking crew led to him being shot in the abdomen.

The policewoman is claiming she fired the shot after the driver drove his car towards her and she thought he was going to run her over. The incident occurred at 6.30 pm on Wednesday at the Diamond Village taxi stand on Coffee Street in San Fernando.

The man’s car was parked on the stand and since it did not carry an ‘H’ licence plate to indicate it is a taxi, officers deemed it to be illegally parked in the taxi stand. When they could not locate the driver, they called for a wrecker to remove the car. On seeing the wrecker, it was reported, the driver ran out of a bar and got into his car.

As he was reversing out of the stand, one of the car’s door mirrors struck the policewoman in her arm.

During a melee that ensued, the driver was shot and later taken to hospital. Southern Division head Snr Supt Zamsheed Mohammed has said that an interim report on the incident has been submitted to Ag Commissioner of Police Stephen Williams while ASP Sharaz Ali continues with investigations.
