Man in court for Hoop of Life murder

Mohammed appeared before Forde-John as acting Chief Magistrate Maria Busby-Earle Caddle is said to be on leave. Marquis was at Tractor Hill, Morvant at about 4 pm, when he was approached by a man known to him. Several shots were fired and Marquis slumped to the ground.

Marquis was rushed to Port of Spain General Hospital but succumbed to his wounds. The “Hoop for Life” basketball programme was started by then Minister of National Security Jack Warner to assist persons in crime hot spots and economically depressed communities to do something positive with their lives.

The programme was hailed as a success as sportsmen and potential basketball players competed for the first prize of $1.5 million. The programme was launched by then Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar following a visit from retired US basketball star Shaquille O’Neal in 2012. There were community teams from Laventille, Morvant, Malabar and Marabella, to name a few.
