Trinidad duo fared badly in Barbados Derby

The Poon Tip Stud Farm Limited -owned Alruna, which is trained by ace John O’Brien, received a hefty bump early in the 2000 metres race at the Garrison Savannah, Barbados, lost her stride and finished last And Nisky’s Boy, owned by Shivam Maharasj was pulled up by jockey Miguel Vasquez midway in the event after suffering a suspected fractured sesamoid.

The race on Tuesday was won by 14/1 long shot Butterfly ridden by jockey Antonio Bishoip.

But on the same day Tuesday, Emancipation Day here, O’Brien (John) celebrated success when his charge Leading Lady ran away with the Midsummer Classicm, second leg of the local Triple Crown, beating the favoured Valorous by a comprehensive 6 3/4 lengths, “The: Lady’s” victory denies Valorous, trained by Jake O’Brien, son of John, of a chance to win the Triple Crown.

Meanwhile, local racing lost another veteran in Vernon “Mal” Lewis, and ex-jockey and trainer who died in Miami, Florida, on Sunday at age 71, and will be buried
