He was not handcuffed when he was recaptured. The charges were laid by Sgt Ali of the Couva CID. At the time of Mohammed’s escape, he was being transported in a police vehicle to the Couva Magistrates Court to answer a charge for possession of a drug apparatus. In that unrelated matter, Mohammed was sentenced to six months hard labour. Yesterday, the court heard that around 9.15 am on Thursday, PC Andrews used a handcuff valued at $300 to have Mohammed taken to the court when he exited the rear right side door of the police vehicle and ran away.

A report was made at the Couva Police Station and Sgt Ali and other members of the Couva CID, Gran Couva Police Station and Central Division Task Force conducted a manhunt for him.

Later that day, at about 6.20 pm, police found him hiding in a drain under some galvanize in a duck pen behind his mother’s house at Teelucksingh Street, California, Couva. Mohammed was taken back to the police station and charged. His sentences will run consecutively. Mohammed, police said, has several matters including housebreaking, larceny and drug possession before the court.
