Assistant CoP: Couva weapons cache a cause for concern

Hackshaw said the seizure of the guns meant there were more high-powered guns, such as those found on Wednesday, that were circulating throughout the country and were being used to fuel serious crimes. He said those weapons might be in the hands of some criminal elements who could use the weapons to cause crime to increase and that was something the Police Service would not condone.

Hackshaw said the way the guns entered the country is engaging the attention of investigators and they were hoping to make a major breakthrough into the illegal smuggling of weapons.

A suspect detained by police for the cache of arms is the son of a man who is in prison for kidnapping.

Police believe a lucrative arms and ammunition operation as well as the smuggling of drugs had been taking place at the Couva location where the guns were found.

The firearms, which included a sniper rifle and a Russian- made assault rifle, were seized by the officers of the Criminal Gang and Intelligence Unit supported by Southern Division police and the Canine Branch.
