Makeup that will Beat heat

If it’s blisteringly hot out, makeup will look the best if it is fresh, light and breathable. It shouldn’t be heavy or cakey because every flaw will be magnified, especially in harsh daylight. It should also be transfer-proof and water-resistant.

On especially hot days, I like to mist my face with setting spray. Yes, that is the spray that you usually use to finish and set your makeup. Using it before and after you apply your makeup creates a sandwich effect, which hydrates your skin and locks down your makeup.

Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray is a favorite of mine. It cools your makeup down via temperature control technology, so it’s wonderful to keep in your purse to refresh your face throughout the day. A primer will give your makeup something to adhere to, so if your skin is oily and you find that your makeup usually melts off, try a mattifying or oil controlling primer. Thick, creamy foundations will feel uncomfortable and heavy in hot temperatures.

The more you have on, the greater your chance for a meltdown. I like to keep face makeup lighter by opting for tinted moisturisers or lightweight liquid foundations.

Laura Mercier’s Oil Free Tinted Moisturiser is a good option if you need minimal coverage and want skincare benefits and SPF while keeping a fresh, semi-matte finish. If you desire more coverage, It Cosmetics CC Cream will be a wonderful option for you. It feels lightweight, contains anti-aging skincare and a high SPF of 50 to protect you from the sun’s harmful rays. When it comes to powder products, you might want to keep it to a minimum. A trickle of sweat can cut straight through some powders, leaving you will a streak of bare skin. Opt for creamier products, since a creamy finish is similar to your skin’s sebum. Thus, beads of sweat will simply roll off your skin without disturbing your makeup.

I like the formula of Colourpop’s Super Shock Cheek Blushes, because they feel and apply just like a cream but dry down and set for a smudge-proof finish. That means that they will work on any skin type! If you still feel the need to powder, don’t apply powder everywhere.

Take a small brush and a fine powder such as Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Finish and lightly set the areas that are prone to getting the oiliest. Around the nose, the center of the forehead, the chin and lightly over the cheeks.

Don’t forget to seal in your makeup with another spritz of setting spray. This will meld all your products together, giving you a fresher, more natural finish while sealing in your makeup.

If you plan on wearing eyeshadow, be sure to prime your eyelids to reduce creasing and fading. Smashbox’s 24-hour Photo Finish Shadow Primer will do the trick. When it comes to eyebrows, you’ll find that waxy pencils and pomades will give you the best results.

Although powders can look really natural, they will fade if you sweat.

Waterproof liquid eyeliner will hold up the best if you usually wear winged eyeliner. Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner will last through the hottest of days.

If you like eyeliner on your waterline, waterproof pencils or gel eyeliner should hold up the best.

However, if you find that no eyeliner ever stays put on you, you’d be better off simply skipping it on brutally hot days. Raccoon eyes are the last thing you’d want! If the day is going to be a scorcher, I recommend skipping false lashes and applying a good waterproof mascara instead. Lights, Camera, Splashes Waterproof Mascara by Tarte is a great choice for clump, smudge and flake-free lashes! Lastly, try to keep your lips moisturised. Overly matte lipsticks can crack and flake in sweltering heat. Opt for a more moisturizing balm stain such as Jordana’s Twist and Shine. Layer it on to build up the color intensity for a bolder, more vibrant look.
