25 delegates head to ACP in October

This was announced yesterday by Oil Field Trade Union (OWTU) education and research officer Ozzi Warwick during a press conference at the OWTU Headquarters, Paramount Building, San Fernando.

In the year 1994 the first assembly was held in Trinidad and Tobago which saw the attendance of 400 delegates from across the Caribbean. Warwick explained that the ACP was a dynamic collective construction by social movement which had a role to play in shaping the destiny of a society. Warwick said the social movement comprised of farmers, trade unions, youth and other community groups that had come together to discuss matters affecting the Caribbean in the context of the current global situation.

The theme for event is “Confronting the global crisis together, we strengthen the movement for the integration of the Caribbean and the welfare of our people.” Warwick said that, in recent times, the people of the Caribbean were confronted with the reality of a global crisis that made the future extremely uncertain.

He said, “These challenges place greater hardships to people across the Caribbean as some of these challenges include climate change which results in an increase in natural disasters such as; earthquakes and hurricanes.” Warwick added that other issues to be discussed included the rise of nationalism in the global north with the election of US president Donald Trump.

He said, “We want to condemn strongly the threat by the Donald Trump administration against Venezuela as we are seeing another tendancy towards imperial intervention.”
