PM Rowley should lead by example
Such action on the part of the Prime Minster not only undermines integrity in public life, but also speaks to the very same issue of corruption that the Prime Minister identified as a major problem in government.
Before a minister takes the oath of office, it is mandatory that he or she becomes familiar with the provisions of our Constitution.
On August 24 at President’s House, Le Hunte willingly proceeded to take the oath of office as a Cabinet minister despite knowing that he was in direct violation of section 42(1).
It is a serious disrespect to the citizenry of TT to have Le Hunte, who will be swearing under oath to uphold the Constitution and the law, continue as a Cabinet minister and senator after this ordeal.
Addressing the issue of corruption in government should start at the top.
Transparency and accountability in public life demands that all Cabinet ministers, whether existing or prospective, respect the Constitution and the rule of law.
If the Prime Minister is serious about improving the problem of corruption within his government, he should therefore lead by example.
It is on this basis that Le Hunte should be disqualified from holding any public office at this time.
