The Defence opens its case today in the Dhanraj murder trial
When hearing resumes in the Dhanraj Singh murder trial today before Justice Paula Mae Weekes and a jury of 12 in the Port-of-Spain Second Criminal Court, the defence led by Karl Hudson-Phillips QC will open its case. Whether or not Dhanraj may go on the witness stand to testify remains to be seen. He also has the right to call witnesses, or say nothing at all. Last Friday, no evidence was heard. Instead, there were some legal arguments. Dhanraj, former Minister of Local Government, has been charged with the murder of Hansraj Sumairsingh, then chairman of the Mayaro/Rio Claro Regional Corporation on December 30, 1999. Elliott Hypolite, who was initially charged with the murder of Sumairsingh, turned State witness after being granted immunity from prosecution. The Prosecution’s team is led by Sir Timothy Cassel QC, who is assisted by Assistant DPP Devan Rampersad, Angelica Teelucksingh and Cheron Raphael. The defence team comprises Hudson-Phillips QC, Ravi Rajcoomar, Prakash Ramadhar, and Jennifer Hudson-Phillips.
