China seeking to enhance ties with TT

Ambassador to China Allan Lii-Shang Jiang offered assurance that the people and Government of the Republic of China are working toward improving ties with Trinidad and Tobago. The ambassador’s address was given at a celebration held at a packed Singho Restaurant by the Chinese Civic Association in commemoration of the 92nd Anniversary of Double Ten. The occasion was also used to commemorate the 197 years of Asian presence in Trinidad and Tobago. The gathering was treated to various performances representing numerous cultures and backgrounds while they had lunch. Lii-Shang Jiang took the congregation along the timeline of Chinese growth and development which has led it to become the, “14th largest trading nation, 16th largest economy and 18th richest nation in the world.”

“With the strength of our economic prowess and democratic achievements, we are ready and willing to share our Taiwan experience with our friends here,” declared Lii-Shang Jiang. The ambassador added, “although we have faced and still face many challenges, I am confident that with the support of our overseas Chinese and Trinidadian friends, Taiwan will overcome them and become stronger and stronger. Let us work together for a better tomorrow.” Newsday’s Assignment Editor Francis Joseph, who was invited to visit Taiwan last August, humoured the crowd with an account of his experiences during the visit. Joseph said that he was told that he was the first Trinidadian journalist to visit the Republic in 30 years due to severed diplomatic ties between the two nations. He directed his desire to rekindle diplomatic relations between Trinidad and China to a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who was present.
