Morean: PNM has most women MPs

Women support the PNM, and the PNM supports women, alluded Attorney-General Glenda Morean in her opening remarks to the 37th Annual Conference of the PNM National Women’s League, yesterday at Port-of-Spain City Hall. Explaining the link between the PNM and its women, Morean said: “The history of our party shows that the women of the PNM have been and continue to be the backbone and the strength of this great party. As members of the PNM we have every right to be proud because our track record in terms of the involvement of women is unbeatable.” In turn, she added, the PNM had supported women. Morean noted: “In the Parliament, the PNM has the highest ratio of women as Members of Parliament, both in the elected House of Representatives and the Senate.   At the Local Government level, women in the PNM continue to dominate — just look at the composition of San Fernando City Corporation”.

She said former party chairman, Dr Linda Baboolal, was now President of the Senate; while within the party itself Minister of Community Development, Joan Yuille-Williams, and Nafeesa Mohammed were PNM deputy political leaders; Norma Lewis Phillip was PNM lady vice chairman; and Rose Janierre was public relations officer. She claimed the PNM was the only real and true political party in Trinidad and Tobago — a party for all persons, regardless of race, colour, class or creed. “Political parties have come and gone but the PNM continues to grow in strength.” Just like the Balisier flower this party has blossomed and will continue to bloom”. Morean asserted that in our very cosmopolitan society of today it was important to maintain unity in diversity, adding: “There are some self serving politicians who persist in using the old racial bogey to divide the people of Trinidad and Tobago. But we have a duty to ensure that we keep the population enlightened and we do everything possible to keep our communities together so that we can achieve our party’s vision for 2020, to make Trinidad and Tobago a developed nation”. She praised Prime Minister Patrick Manning for the foresight, courage and determination of his recent Budget statement, and told delegates it was their duty to support the Government.
