Ramesh predicts massive support for new party
FORMER Attorney General Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj is predicting overwhelming public support for the launch of his “new political vehicle” when “everything is finalised.”
Addressing a National Team Unity meeting at the Lion’s Civic Centre on Sunday, Maharaj said: “Some 50,000 persons will attend the launch when everything is finalised.” The former AG said there have been “positive responses from all quarters throughout the country, including UNC and PNM supporters as well as persons not aligned to any party to form the new movement.” In a Newsday interview last month, Maharaj said his “new vehicle” would be launched sometime next year and NTU would be a part of it. NTU founding member Trevor Sudama admitted that NTU had been politically dormant for some time.
Maharaj reiterated his claims that the Government “is not committed to clean Government or corrupt-free transactions. He further alleged that one Government minister “has acquired millions of dollars in a short space of time.” He said the new Budget “is not a serious document” which could not guarantee sustainable development in Trinidad and Tobago. Maharaj claimed the nation’s energy reserves would soon be depleted, there was excess capital in the banks and crime and kidnapping were causing businesses to close and business-people to flee the country.
