Alleyne did not adhere to Government policy — Enill

Junior Finance Minister Conrad Enill was adamant yesterday that former Unit Trust Chairman Hubert Alleyne was fired for not adhering to Government policy.

Speaking at a press briefing at Central Bank offices where a reducttion in prime lending rate was announced, Enill said the UTC chairman was appointed by the Government in consultation with the Central Bank and was expected to carry out the policy of Government. He dodged further questions on the issue, saying all issues relating to the UTC will be dealt with by the current chairman and former Central Bank, Ainsworth Harewood and the UTC Board. He said he was going to refrain from commenting because  he did not want to interfere with the stability of the UTC Central Bank Governor Wart Williams said that he could not comment on the UTC imbroglio because any statement he made could be misconstrued.

Williams was asked to give a view on the brewing controversy at the UTC which saw Chairman Hubert Alleyne being relieved of his position.
“What the UTC needs now is stability and should be encouraged,” he said. Williams said the Central Bank was one of the institutions involved and it would be highly inappropriate to make statements that could be misconstrued by UTC or any other kind of institution. He took the view that the Central Bank has an advisory capacity, “and nobody wants an advisor who will go out and say what his advice is.”
