Pensioner jailed for false declaration

AN elderly man was yesterday sentenced to six months imprisonment for making a false declaration before a Justice of the Peace last year at the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court.

Constantine Raymond, 67, was handed the sentence by Acting Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington, who presided over the San Fernando First Court. Court prosecutor Cpl Wendell Fernando said on January 16, 2002, Raymond, while before the JP to stand bail for someone else, declared that he had no previous convictions for any offence. PC Teesdale of the Anti-Corruption Investigation Bureau conducted investigations and  presented documents indicating that Raymond indeed had two previous convictions — one of which was for a similar offence (false declaration). Raymond was arrested on October 15 this year and charged with making a false declaration.
