Traffic pile up in Diego Martin

There was a massive pile up of traffic in Diego Martin yesterday as St Lucien Road, a main road in the area, was blocked to vehicular traffic and dug up by WASA for the construction of town houses in Petit Valley. The road was blocked from the Wendy Fitzwilliam Bouleverd to Sierra Leone Road, pushing traffic onto the Diego Martin Road. The work continues today causing great inconvenience to motorists. The town houses are being built by Gowkaran Mahabir and the construction work on the hillside has been causing inconveniences for people in the area for several months. Chaos reigned for hours along the Diego Martin Main Road yesterday as hundreds of motorists used that access to get to and from their various destinations.

Police officers admitted that the situation got out of control and they were forced to seek assistance from other traffic officers. The situation was caused by the closure of the St Lucien Road from Sierra Leone Road to Wendy Fitz William Boulevard. The road was closed off from 6 am yesterday to 6 pm today. This was done to facilitate the placing of a sewer main for the Vale View  project. A public notice on the closure of the roadway was placed in an ad which appeared on Friday’s Newsday. Motorists complained bitterly to Newsday claiming that it was unthinkable that one contractor was able to inconvenience thousands of person because of a development at Vale View. Some homeowners who live along St Lucien Road were unable to return to their home as they remained trapped in traffic for hours. Others left home in disgust and never returned until late last night when the traffic eased up.
