$40 robbery trial winds down

HIGH COURT Judge Alice Yorke Soo-Hon will present closing summation today in the trial in which Morvant resident Quincy Samuel appeared in the Port-of-Spain Fourth Criminal Court charged with robbery with violence. Following the summation the nine-member jury comprising six women and three men, will retire to deliberate after which a verdict will be presented to the court. Samuel allegedly robbed his “friend” Gilbert Miller of $40 on May 29, 2000, while he was walking down Poinsetta Drive, Morvant. It is also alleged that during the robbery Samuel slapped Miller, 76, in his face causing him to stumble.

At the hearing yesterday both defence attorney Asaf Hosein and State attorney Nalini Singh addressed the jury and reminded them of the evidence that was presented to them during the trial. Hosein reminded the jury that the onus was on the State to prove that his client was guilty of the offence he was charged with, and called on them to take into consideration all of the evidence presented to them in the case. The State’s case was that on May 29, 2000, at about 5 pm, Miller, of Coconut Drive, Morvant, was walking along Poinsetta Drive, Morvant, when he was attacked and robbed of $40 by Samuel. During the robbery, Samuel allegedly dealt Miller a blow to his face, causing him to stumble. Miller then went to the Morvant Police Station, where he made a report to PC Imraz Hosein. Samuel was eventually arrested and charged for the offence.
The matter continues today.
