Sando man held with rifle, ammo

A 22-year old San Fernando man was arrested after police raided a house yesterday and discovered a Venezuelan-made rifle, nine rounds of ammunition and four bulletproof vests. Police believe the suspect may be linked to the murder of Nigel Singh of Rancho Quemado, who was abducted from his home by four armed men on October 14. Singh was discovered dead a short distance away six hours later with a bullet to his leg. An autopsy revealed that he had bled to death. According to police reports, around 6 am a party of officers from the San Fernando CID, co-ordinated by Snr Supt Desmond Lambert and led by Sgt Belingy, executed a search warrant at the home of a 22-year-old man of Claire Street, San Fernando.

During a search of the premises, the officers found a 7.62 self loading rifle, nine rounds of 7.62 ammunition and four bulletproof vests. One of the vests, had a drawing of a cobra head and the words “Brigadr Especial,” written on it. The suspect was arrested and taken to the San Fernando CID where up to late yesterday he was being interrogated. He is expected to be placed on several identification parades over the weekend before charges are laid against him. The team of officers, that also included Cpl Roopnarine, PCs Smith, Sahadeo and Deosaran were highly complimented by Snr Supt Lambert for their “intelligence and the successful result of the exercise.” Investigations are continuing.
