Handyman stabbed to death

A 46-year old Chaguanas handyman who left his New Settlement Caroni Savannah Road, Chaguanas home to view lighted deyas on Divali night, was stabbed to death and his body dumped in a gravel heap close to his home. Christopher Pierre was described yesterday as a cool, friendly person who never bothered anyone. Residents of Caroni Savannah Road who knew the victim claimed that he was a friendly person who was family oriented and very respectful. Police investigators said yesterday that based on information received, Pierre and others were involved in a heated argument on Divali night and he was stabbed once in the chest.

The stab wound punctured his heart causing instant death. His killer reportedly dragged his body to the gravel heap and then fled the scene. The body of Pierre was only discovered around 8 am yesterday. A District Medical Officer who went to the scene told investigators that Pierre was killed around midnight on Friday. When Sunday Newsday visited the home of the deceased his sister Vera Phillip said that her brother left home on Divali night to view the lighted deyas in the neighbourhood. She said that when he failed to return home she did not feel that his life was in danger and instead felt that he was at the home of a neighbour enjoying the divali festivities. The grieving woman added that around 8 am yesterday she was alerted by a neighbour, that the body of her brother had been discovered in a gravel heap. The neighbour told her that her brother was beaten to death, however checks by the DMO revealed that death was due to a single stab wound. A party of pfficers led by Sgt Dennis Housend and including Cpl Peterkin and others visited the scene of the murder yesterday. Up until late yesterday, a suspect was being interrogated at the Chaguanas Police Station.
