Stop Carnival overkill
THE EDITOR: With the recent official (and costly) launch of Carnival 2004, many people worldwide must again be smiling wryly at the verdict 33 years ago on our mentality by Singapore’s prime minister. And even God is probably now mystified by our inane desire to change the seasons of nature. To complete this madness maybe we should start implementing the following from next year:
• Christmas and parang from mid August.
• Easter from December 1.
• August or “summer” holidays from April 15.
• Divali from May 1.
Have our national policy makers forgotten the Scriptures (and common sense) telling us there is a time and place for everything? For Christ’s sake, leave Carnival for the new year and stop this overkill of a two-day festival celebrated so much more sensibly and timely in many other countries. Is it because we have nothing else to celebrate in this country?
