URP helps Rio Claro mom
Williams’ story was published on Page Nine of Newsday’s October 13, edition.
Her home had been bulldozed by persons claiming ownership of the land who wanted her off the property. Williams insisted she occupied the land for over two decades. Williams said all her children’s belongings, including school uniform and books, were buried in mud.
Household items, including furniture, which were damaged when her house was being demolished were also destroyed in the rain. Williams, a URP worker, said she also lost $1,500 worth of groceries. It was the second time in recent months, the family found themselves without a place to call home. In July, the wooden two bedroom house occupied by Williams, her husband Victor, 55, and five of her nine children, was destroyed by fire.
After Williams’ story was published, Regional Manager of the Rio Claro Division of the URP Cuthbert Pierre and his staff donated food and clothing to the mother and her children.
She received the items at the URP’s divisional offices at Rio Claro, soon after Newsday’s publication.
Communications Officer for URP Michelle Perez said the Rio Claro and Sangre Grande regional offices were moved to help the Williams family after reading about their plight in Newsday.
Perez said URP staff donated food and articles of clothing to help the family. Williams said she was very grateful for and overjoyed by the support of the Regional Manager and staff at the Rio Claro and Sangre Grande offices.
She also thanked Newsday for highlighting her plight and said she was still seeking Government’s assistance to provide housing for her family.
