Shot man crawls to court

GRIMACING in pain and with blood seeping through his bandages, 41-year-old Kenrick Manwarren crawled onto a bench in the San Fernando Magistrates Court Friday, where he appeared to answer several arms and ammunition and shooting charges.

Manwarren, who was allegedly wounded in a police shootout earlier this week, had to be helped out of the court and towards the prisoners’ holding-bay of the courthouse, by fellow remand prisoners. He appeared before Second Court Magistrate Sonia Aleong charged with possession of  a firearm, possession of ammunition, two counts of shooting at a police officer, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and being at an enclosed property. He was granted $200,000 bail with approval to cover all charges, after court prosecutor Cpl Wendell Fernando did  not object to the bail. Manwarren was represented by attorney Ian Gray.

Manwarren, who was suffering from gunshot wounds to both legs, crawled on his hands to seat himself on a bench before the magistrate. He was hospitalised after the alleged shooting  incident on Tuesday at Dundonald Street, San Fernando. Three other persons, facing charges arising out of the same incident, Wilfred Baptiste, 29,  Roland Diaz, 30,  and Brian Montano, 27, appeared in court on Thursday. Montano faced only the charge of being at an enclosed property and was granted $10,000 bail, while Baptiste and Diaz were denied bail. Manwarren is due to reappear in court on November 7.
