Khan promises St Lucien Rd repairs Sunday
WORKS MINISTER Franklyn Khan disclosed that rehabilitative road works at St Lucien Road, Diego Martin, will take place on Sunday and should be completed within “half-a-day.”
Speaking with Newsday following yesterday’s Cabinet meeting at Whitehall, Khan said NIPDEC had awarded a contract to Coosals Construction Ltd to undertake the works. He explained that the job was awarded to a major contractor so there would be no “fumble.” Khan said the reason why work did not begin earlier at St Lucien Road was because the police could not guarantee sufficient manpower to oversee the works and that problem has now been rectified. The Minister said the immediate priority is getting the road repaired and other things will be dealt with afterwards.
Khan previously said that developer of the Vale View Project Gowkaran Mahabir may have to dish out some $100,000 of his own money to repair unauthorised work done on St Lucien Road, Diego Martin, three weekends ago. The Minister said he received a letter from Water and Sewerage Authority CEO Errol Grimes which said permission was given to connect the sewer lines, but not to close the road.
National Security Minister Howard Chin Lee has requested a report on the road’s closure, which he is expected to receive soon. Senior police officers stated that St Lucien Road residents were supposed to have been consulted by officers from the district police station (West End Police Station) prior to the road’s closure and residents said they were not consulted by the police. The officers said an investigation has been launched and disciplinary action will be taken against those officers if they did not consult the residents.
