Queen maker’s son on $.3M fraud charge
THE SON of the late queen maker, Kim Sabeeny, along with three other men, were yesterday each granted bail in the sum of $100,000 with surety when they appeared before a Port-of-Spain magistrate jointly charged with fraud against a commercial bank.
Troy Sabeeny, 37, of Victoria Gardens, Diego Martin, Desmond Haynes, 51, of La Puerta Avenue, Diego Martin, Godfrey Lamont, 43, of Savannah Villas, Aranguez and Anthony Chow, 42, of Windsurf Road, Westmoorings, appeared before Magistrate Ejenny Espinet at the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ First Court charged with conspiring to defraud the Westmoorings branch of Republic Bank of $317,000 between June 6 and 11, 2002. The fraudulent cheque was allegedly made payable to Haynes Plumbing 1990 Ltd and drawn on another account. The company is owned by Haynes.
The men were charged following the execution of warrants on them yesterday morning. The indictable charges were laid by Acting Cpl Brian Peters of the Fraud Squad. The four were represented by attorneys Ian Brooks and Phillip Lamont. In their bail applications, Brooks and Lamont highlighted the fact that their clients had no antecedents or pending matters and that they had “made arrangements to turn themselves in.” Although the results of tracing were not yet available, police prosecutor, Sgt Claudette Bynoe had no objections to bail and Espinet granted bail subject to tracing. The men will re-appear in court today.
