Summer Alston-Smith — Top A’ Level student
Summer Alston-Smith, recipient of the President’s Award Medal and a Modern Studies Scholarship, and top A’ Level student at St Joseph’s Convent, Port- of-Spain, received seven awards yesterday at the school’s annual awards ceremony entitled “Given to Each for the Benefit of All.” Alston-Smith placed fourth in the world in Sociology, eighth in History and ninth in English Literature. She received the Javouhey Award for her initiative, generosity and commitment to the school. She also got an Award of Achievement for attaining the President’s Medal. The Award of Achievement is presented to any student who received five Grade A’s at the GCE A’ Level Examination or ten Distinctions at the CXC/Cambridge O’ Level. Alston-Smith also received an award for being the top A’ Level student.
Since she is currently studying at Reading University in England, her mother, Carol Alston-Smith, received the awards on her behalf. Eight awards were presented to six other students who achieved world ranking, placing in the top ten in the world in the GCE Cambridge A’ Level Examinations. Included in this category were Crystal Lee Lum, who placed first in Geography and fifth in Biology and Kimberly Ghany, tenth in Geography and fifth in Biology. Ghany also won the Rose Ball Award for the student who best represented the ideals of the school. The two male students in last year’s A’ Level class, Jason Ramsingh and Joseph Jay who won national scholarships also received awards yesterday. In addition to the scholarship winners, 23 students received Awards of Excellence for outstanding performance in the GCE Cambridge A’ Level Examinations. For results at O’ Level Examinations, 22 students received Awards of Excellence for attaining eight or more distinctions and 48 students were awarded for six grade ones. Shivanee Ramlochan won a prize for the best short story in the CXC Examinations. Delivering the feature address at the ceremony, was Hazel Reis, past principal of St Joseph’s Convent, St Joseph. She stressed the importance of the theme for the ceremony. “One of the many lessons to learn is that people who have a common direction and sense of community get where they are going quickly and easily.
