Wilkins earns St Augustine a tie

PETAL WILKINS slotted in a goal with the seconds ticking away to earn St Augustine Senior Comprehensive a 22-22 tie with Toco Composite, as action in the British Gas Secondary Schools Netball League continued in the East zone at the Arima Public Courts yesterday.

The teams were locked 5-5 at the end of the opening quarter, but the girls of the Green Machine took a two-goal lead into the half-time interval 10-8. When the whistle blew to end the third quarter, Toco reduced the slim deficit to 17-16 and the fourth quarter produced some very exciting netball with both teams playing their hearts out for supremacy, until Wilkins’ heroics. Goal-shoot Ronalda Lovelace scored ten goals from 25 attempts and goal-attack Tracey Courtney 12 from 20 attempts for the Toco girls, while Wilkins had 19 goals from 27 attempts and Crystal Alleyne three from four for the Green Machine.

Sangre Grande Junior Secondary humbled Curepe 36-7 in another East zone game, after leading 8-7; 178-4; 23=5 at the quarter stages. Murlin Paul had 20 goals from 36 attempts and Aviann Archie 14 of 36 for the winners, while Genessa Lezama, Priscilla Thompson and Ayeshga Peters scored two goals each and Martina Goddard one for Curepe. In North zone action at the Jean Pierre Sports Complex, champions Mucurapo Senior Comprehensive continued to dominate Group Y with a 26-14 victory over Success/Laventille Composite. Afeisha Noel scored 21 goals from 32 attempts and Afeisha Mark had five of eight for the champs, while Tinesha Price had six goals from 12 attempts and Ghaaliya O’Brien eight of 19 for Success/Laventille.

South East Port-of-Spain won a close game in Group X over Belmont Junior Secondary 15-12. Shenese John led the scoring with nine goals, Rhonique Williams had five and Shanna Dottin one for SEPoS, while Kershell Campbell scored six, Atoya Farray five and Acrian Arrington one for Belmont. St Martin’s whipped Malick 214-17 in the other Group X game, with national under-16 Adasha Norton scoring 18 goals from 22 attempts, Afiya Ishmael three and Afiya Samuel three for the winnersa. Sally Currency got nine goals from 17 attempts and Giselle Antoine eight from 12 for Malick.
