Weston gets world boxing title fight

UNDEFEATED female lightweight boxer Iva Weston has been given a shot at a world title next month in California, USA.

This has been revealed by promoter/trainer Fitzroy Richards who said Weston, unbeaten in her seven fights to date, will meet American Jennifer Alcon over ten rounds. At stake will be the Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) crown but Richards is hoping that Weston will get a crack at the two other championship belts held by the 33-year-old Alcon. Winner of 17 fights, 11 by the knockout route, Alcon is the holder of the lightweight crowns of the International Women’s Boxing Federation (IWBF) and the Women’s International Boxing Federation (WIBF). “I am in negotiation with Alcon’s handlers to have the three belts put on the line. It is an excellent opportunity for Weston to shoot into the international spotlight,” said Richards yesterday.

Currently Weston is ranked sixth in the world and number one in the WIBA Youth Championship rankings. “I have no reservations in saying that she is the best pound for pound boxer in the WIBA. Weston is classy and the only ambidextrous boxer currently in the game,” Richards said. The promoter/trainer said judging from the reports he has been receiving about Alcon, he is confident that Weston will be crowned world champion on December 11 in California. “Weston is younger than Alcon. She is beautifully prepared having recently fought in Barbados, winning impressively. And from what I have heard Alcon is a bit washed up now having scraped up some recent victories in controversial manner,” said Richards. Weston will be only the second local female boxer to challenge for a world championship.

Giselle Salandy, a junior welterweight also trained by Richards, was the first. She won the WIBA title last November in Curacao outpointing Paola Rojas of Colombia. However the 16-year-old Siparia schoolgirl has not fought since then having being barred from displaying her skill in her homeland by virtue of being under 18. She risks having the junior welterweight title declared vacant by the WIBA if she does not defend her crown in the near future.
