BpTT honours top Tobago students
The top 14 students — all girls — in this year’s Secondary Entrance Assess-ment (SEA) examination in Tobago have been specially honoured by British Petroleum, Trinidad and Tobago (bpTT).
Taking pride of place at the bpTT awards ceremony held at the Tobago House of Assembly’s (THA’s) Education Division on Wednesday afternoon, was former St Andrew’s Anglican student Kayola Wilson who placed first in the SEA results in Tobago. Wilson, who now attends Bishop’s High School in lower Scarborough, was presented with a special bpTT award for her outstanding achievement. The other awardees included St Marie E Thomas, Kere A Wylie, Kiah C Phillip, all past students of St Nicholas Private Primary; Akiliah N Winchester and La Trisha O’Neil, both from Scarborough Methodist; Christina C Tam, who attended Murray House Prep; Venecia A Carrington, from Mason Hall Government; Shenell S Hunte of Bon Accord Government; Rochelle S Mathews; Sherese R Alfred; Rebecca M Vilain; Arianne S Jordan; and Luvette A Gunning.
All of them, except one, are now students at Bishop’s High School. Addressing the ceremony, manager of government and public affairs issues and relationships at bpTT, Gerard Jackson, pointed to the conspicuous absence of boys among the awardees. “And it’s a question we need to ask ourselves — why?” The bpTT representative also noted the number of media reports currently circulating in Trinidad reflecting certain activities at several of the schools there. “I certainly hope that we can work together, as students, as parents, as teachers, and as administrators, to ensure that that never happens in Tobago,” Jackson said to his audience. In turn, THA Chief Secretary and Secretary for Education Orville London specially commended bpTT for its continued commitment to the development of the country’s youth.
