Crime data on deportees needed
THE EDITOR: The recent comments by Trade Minister Mr Ken Valley, refuting the assertion by US Ambassador, Dr Roy Austin that deportees from the USA were not significantly impacting on the crime wave sweeping TT, especially kidnappings, should be backed up with statistics and not be presented as “ole talk” to the public. That is, telling the people what you think they want to hear.
If the Minister has statistical data that shows the negative impact these deportees are having on crime in TT, he should present them and not just make broad general statements. These are not statements of fact and just serve to rile up the population, without any numbers to back up the rhetoric. The Minister should go to the police department or the National Security Ministry (who should be compiling such data), get the real numbers and present it to the country. What statistical analysis of crime data has been done to prove that deportees are the ones committing these crimes? What proof does he present to back up his claims? If he has none, he should refrain from speculation and other unscientific political jargon, designed to attempt to soothe the raw nerves of the nation that is besieged by crime and the numerous kidnappings that are plaguing the country’s business people.
On the other hand, the US Ambassador presented statistical data that showed that the deportees’ impact on crime on TT was only about two percent for 2000-2001. He should have had current data for 2001-2002 and be working to compile data for 2002-2003. At last he has something concrete to base his statements on. On the other hand, the Trade Minister seemed to be talking based on hunches, speculations, perceptions and feelings, rather than solid analytical data. I am not saying whose information is right or whose is wrong. But when you are going to dispute the Ambassador’s numbers, at last come up with some statistical data of our own, that can be validated. Go back and do your homework Mr Valley before you spout out the party line that you want the country to swallow.
