Cops charge Coast Guard

A 27-year-old Coast Guard found himself on the wrong side of the law yesterday when, after being robbed by three men, he cursed the police and ran away from lawmen.

The man, of Quinam Road, Siparia, was a fugitive for seven hours before police caught up with him walking on the road near where he lives.  According to reports, around 1am Siparia police responded to a report of an altercation in the area and found the coast guard man scuffling with three men. When the lawmen parted the fight, they were informed that three of the fighters were gang-members who had robbed the coast guardsman of $120. However, the coast guardsman continued cursing loudly in the street, and resisted the cops when they tried to subdue him. He also ran away from the scene, police said. Later around 8am, patrolling police picked up him up walking along the main road.

Police were expected to charge the coast guardsman with using obscene language, resisting arrest, and escaping lawful custody, which he will answer to when he appears before a Siparia Magistrate tomorrow. The other three men were charged with robbery and are also expected to appear in court on tomorrow.
