TTABA plan for big Caribbean championships

INCUMBENT Mike Jarvis withstood a challenge from popular sporting media personality Selwyn Melville to retain his post as president of the Trinidad and Tobago Amateur Boxing Association at their annual general elections at Marabella.

Jarvis whipped Melville 26-12 and his entire executive followed suit to retain their places at the elections on Saturday last. Cecil Forde returns as vice-president after taking care of challenger Trevor Nelson 26-12. Mario Robinson also kept his post as secretary, while assistant-secretary Deopersad Ramoutar and public relations officer Roland Cave were un-opposed. Fitzroy Richards defeated Innocent Roberts 25-12 for the post of  treasurer of the association for yet another term.

Meanwhile, Forde speaking to Newsday yesterday said: “The elections are now over and we have already buckled down to hard work as we strive to take boxing in Trinidad and Tobago to new heights. “First on the agenda is the national championships carded for January, and plans are already underway for that tournament. “From this series we will pick the national team to take part in the Caribbean Amateur Boxing Association (CABA) games to be staged in Trinidad on April 7, 2004.” This is the first time Trinidad and Tobago will be hosting the 20-year-old event. Forde also revealed that officials of the Association of International Boxing Amateurs (AIBA) will be coming to view the CABA games with an eye to giving the Caribbean tournament international status. He said the CABA games will be a big event for Trinidad and Tobago as over 230 athletes will be arriving for the tournament.
