Coach Guillen key to club’s success
Coach of the Ceramic Merryboys cricket team Charles Guillen has come in for high praise after taking the team to three crowns and a runners-up spot this year.
Guillen took over the reins of the club earlier this year and has been a key element of the success of the team. Club president Patrick Rampersad was pleased with his performance. “When you play cricket for a team like Merryboys at the highest level in domestic cricket you should be able to bat and bowl. It is not a development programme. We needed a coach who can plan for success and teach the technicalities of the game. This is why we brought in Charles Guillen,” he said. “He has a very sound knowledge of the game and is a very bright individual. After he took over at Merryboys he started to plan strategies that were never done before and sent out his players to execute the plan. This in my opinion is what ‘Guillos’ has done for our club. He has taken us to a different level and this is what has brought us the success.”
Before taking over at Merryboys, Guillen was attached to the Queen’s Park Cricket Club as a coach and was the key to their development programme. He played cricket for Queen’s Park at the domestic level but was more interested in coaching. Guillen is also coach of the North Zone in the annual British Gas Under-15 cricket series. Next season, Merryboys will be using Guillen and another former Queen’s Park player Michael Carew to formulate a development plan for the youths of the club so that the first team will always have a good supply of youngsters.
