Cops crack overseas mail tampering racket

POLICE believe they have made a major breakthrough in the overseas mail tampering racket with the arrest of two Service Air Ltd employees. For years there have been complaints from clients over mail tampering between American airports and Piarco Airport where valuables, cheques and cash disappeared.

A police source told Newsday, “The arrest of these two men, we believe, can end this long-standing concern about how persons were able to remove the bags, interfere with the mail, remove documents and valuables and manage the same quota of bags for TT Post checks.” Service Air is responsible for collecting bagged overseas mail at Piarco Airport and handing it over to TT Post, where the mail is sorted and stamped, before being distributed.

According to information, officers of the St Joseph Police Station were on inquiries in the Calvary Hill, San Juan area, when they observed two men in a car acting suspiciously. They stopped and checked the car and found two garbage bags filled with unstamped mail bound for local addresses. Some of the envelopes were opened. Two men, Devon George, 24, of Upper Bushe Street, San Juan and Badie Jaggesar, 28, of Main Road, Cumuto, were arrested and later charged.
