Fire destroys Buyers Mart warehouse in Chaguanas
Fire officers from the Couva and Chaguanas Fire Stations responded to the call of a fire at Buyers Mart at about 6 pm, yesterday.
The entire warehouse was completely gutted and the owners of the warehouse have estimated that millions of dollars in merchandise was destroyed in the fire.
Fire officials were also hampered by a lack of water.
“At first they were not getting water, but WASA responded and they were able to put out the blaze but not before everything, including the warehouse, was destroyed,” an eyewitness said.
Fire officials were on the scene up to late last night. Rampersad Ramsaran, Divisional Fire Officer for Chaguanas, said it was too early to determine the cause of the blaze.
The warehouse was owned by the Roopnarine family.
Fire investigators are expected to return to the scene of the fire today in an attempt to determine the cause of the fire.
