Body found in cane field
A decomposed body wrapped in black clothing was discovered in a shallow grave about three feet deep inside a canefield at Ramsaran Trace, Jerningham Junction Road, Cunupia, around 6 pm yesterday.
Around 5.30 yesterday, an anonymous caller telephoned Crime Stoppers and informed them that a body was in a shallow grave in the canefield. PCs Mohammed and Singh responded to the report and with assistance from villagers dug up the shallow grave and discovered the body. The body was covered in a black cloth with an electrical cord tied around the neck, abdomen, and feet. It was removed from the grave and the District Medical Officer examined the body and revealed that the person may have been dead for at least three days.
Around 7 pm yesterday, scores of villagers gathered close to the scene and expressed horror that a person could be buried in a shallow grave in such close proximity to their homes. A party of officers led by ASP John Millet, Inspector Bert Raphael, Acting Sgt Agith Persad and PC Harvey visited the scene and carried out a search for clues. Up until late last night, police were unable to ascertain whether the body was that of a male or female due to the state of decomposition. Police from the Central Division were checking records to find out who, if anyone, was reported missing between last week and Sunday.
