Sensei Williams nominated for ‘Karateka of the Year’
The Trinidad and Tobago Karate Alliance (TTKA) have announce that Sensei Darryl Williams is their choice for “Karateka of the Year.” Sensei Williams, who is based in New York, USA was recognised for his tremendous contribution to the development of karate both in Trinidad and Tobago and New York.
The former Diego Martin native is the founder of The Karate Centre —-International (New York) and Technical director for TTKA. He is also the only foreign-based member of the Trinidad and Tobago Karate Union (TTKU). Williams holds a 5th Degree Black Belt from two international organisations and is a certified referee and accomplished coach. In the last two years he had conducted numerous technical clinics for many schools in Trinidad and Tobago including the now disbanded Trinidad and Tobago Karate Federation (TTKF), of which he was a founding member.
Sensei Williams is a career karate instructor and makes his living by teaching at his dojos in New York and conducting seminars throughout the USA and other countries. Since January, he was responsible for recruiting more than five countries into Shuko-Kai -International including Trinidad and Tobago.
The TTKA, based in Pasea, Tunapuna while very young have major plans for 2004 including membership in the TTKU and working with any karate school or organisation both local and international in the advancement of karate. The only rule is that they must embrace the goals of the World Karate Federation (WKF) and the local bodies must be members of the TTKU. In fact the TTKA is strongly encouraging all karate schools in Trinidad and Tobago to join the TTKU as the sole national body for the sport. The TTKA are also demanding the TTKU to review its policy by allowing each club to have equal vote regardless of style. “Not doing so is prejudice. This is one of the main reasons for so little club membership,” stated a release from general-secretary Keshni Sookram.
President of the TTKA is Indira Ramlogan while Chief Instructor is Curtis Carrera, 3rd Dan. Technical Director is Darryl Williams. Their phone number is: 642-5925, 643-9023 and e-mail: Trinbagokarate @yahoo.com
