Sugar Mike packs 56 kilos in Gold Cup

NEWCOMER Le Fabuleux Dansur is among eight runners down to challenge the prowess of champion sprinter/stayer Sugar Mike in Boxing Day’s (Friday) feature Guardian Gold Cup at Santa Rosa Park, Arima. But the more serious challenge is sure to come from Triple Crown idol Top Of The Class, who will be receiving seven kilos from the champ. Sugar Mike has been docked 56 kilos by the handicappers for the 2000 metres event worth an overall $125,000, and will have regular partner Brian Harding in the irons.

Privilege, a recent winner, will have ten rivals in the Guardian Life St James Stakes over 1350 metres for two-year-old colts and geldings. But Pave The Way, a very impressive winner last time out and the very speedy Salsa Moves are sure to be the market favourites. In the fillies category, the Guardian Life St Ann’s Stakes over the same trip and worth $75,000 overall just as the St James, Melanie My Love looks like the one they will all have to beat in this 12-horse event. The best betting race of the day seems to be the Guardian Life Investor sprint for West Indies bred three-year-old maidens over 1200 metres.
