Ato voted ‘worst sportsman’ in TT

TRINIDAD and Tobago sprinter Ato Boldon has been voted the “Worst Sportsman in TT” after a dismal year on the international track and field circuit. The decision was reached in a novel competition organised by sports talk show host Andre E Baptiste in which i95.5 listeners voted on their choice through the telephone or by e-mail. Boldon, is a quadruple Olympic medallist and former World 200 metres Champion based in Los Angeles, California and who suffered his worst season in 2003. The results were tabulated on Saturday by Baptiste’s assistant Rochelle Johnson on the much listened to programme. Making the draw was Newsday’s Sports Editor Zaid Mohammed.

At stake was a hamper which included a ceramic set, Alesie rice, chocolates, a bottle of wine and two large Toyota umbrellas, valued at a whopping $800. Baptiste said the hamper was donated by Trinidad Commodities Limited of O’Meara Road in Arima. Among those in the running for the dubious “Worst Sportsman in Trinidad and Tobago” title were Ken Doldron, president of the National Amateur Athletics Association; and Sport and Youth Affairs Minister Roger Boynes.
