Ames ends golf year in top 100

NEW YORK: Trinidad-born Stephen Ames, now a Canadian citizen, has ended the 2003 season among the world’s top 100 golfers. In the last rankings for the year, Ames was listed 98th in the official world golf rankings, which is headed by the famous American Tiger Woods, followed by Fiji’s Vijay Singh, and Ernie Els of South Africa. Ames had four top-10 finishes on the US PGA Tour during the year — a tie for fifth at the Greensboro Classic in October his best finish. His other top-10 placings came at the Bob Hope Classic (8th), the Chrysler Championship (9th), and the Bay Hill Invitational (10th). The 39-year-old Ames, who took the oath of Canadian citizenship in Calgary three weeks ago, was born in San Fernando, Trinidad.  He is married to Jodi, a Canadian, and the couple has been living in Calgary with their two sons — six-year-old Justin and four-year-old Ryan — the past several years.

Ames earned US$1.01 million this year on PGA tour, finishing 72nd overall on the money list. His career highlights so far have been victories at the 1996 Benson and Hedges Open and 1994 Open V33 tournaments in Europe, and second place at the rich 2002 Players Championship in the United States of America. World Golf Rankings 2003: 1 Tiger Woods; 2 Vijay Singh; 3 Ernie E; 4 Davis Love III; 5 Jim Furyk; 6 Mike Weir; 7 Retief Goosen; 8 Padraig Harrington; 9 David Toms; 10 Kenny Perry; 98th - Stephen Ames
