Hosts Trinidad and Tobago put up an impressive show as the NEMWIL Southern Caribbean Regatta came to an end yesterday after three days of keen competition. The dinghy  regatta showcased the talents of a strong Trinidad and Tobago contingent against competition from the Southern Caribbean and South America. At the presentation ceremony yesterday TT Sailing Association official David Lewis expressed pleasure at the new drive to revive dinghy regattas and revealed that plans are already being formulated for a similar event next year. Lewis revealed that the 2004 event promises to be on a bigger scale and thanked all sponsors, parents, supporters, organising committees, volunteers and the government which facilitated the duty free importation of the Optimist dinghies.

The local team participated with fervour and gusto in the wake of the death of coach Jeron Rogers who passed away in a vehicular accident recently.  They were marshalled into battle by Peruvian coach, Fernando “Happy” Alegre. “Best Overall Female Sailor” Trinidad and Tobago’s Diva Amon kept the flag flying as she and team-mate Daniel Stollmeyer returned a slim 10 points, 14 ahead of their nearest competition the Barbados pair of Kwame Hinds and Cyril Lecrenay on 24, to take the MR-15 crown. Amon and Stollmeyer led their countrymen, Marcus Gomez and Michael McQuilkin who were third on 27 points; while Katrina Packer and Christiane Farah were fourth on 36 with Grenada’s Jonathan Peryag and Sam Goodchild fifth on 42.

Sr Max racers Paul Amon, Alan Alkins and Chris Avey of TT wrested the top spot from countrymen Nicholas Rupnarine, Jennifer and Laura Arindell who were first at the end of the second day. They finished first and second on 16 and 18 points respectively. Four of the five SR Max racing teams were local and Peter Baillie, Pierre La Borde and P Solomon made sure that the class was closed as TT took all top places, leaving Barbados, the only foreign competition, in fifth on 46 points. Martinique’s dominance of the Laser racing Class was evident when Stephane Monsigna, Jean Denis Lauhon and Guillome Dossantons all of Martinique took the top three places. At the end of two days of racing Trinidad and Tobago’s Andrew Lewis led Argentina’s Sebastien Peri Brusa in the Optimist Race. But a determined Brusa fought from behind and finished on 20 points ahead of Lewis on 28 capturing the “Best Overall Male Sailor” accolade in the process.
