Sanford has a secured place on WI team

THE EDITOR: The return of Adam Sanford to West Indies cricket is just as stunning as his emergence in 2002. The Dominican-born pacer is the first man of Carib extract and the second policeman of note to represent the regional side (Ranjie Nanan is the first to represent the West Indies as a policeman). Sanford responded well to his call in the match against South Africa in Border at a time when there is a dearth in penetrative fast bowlers within the West Indies and his place is now secure in the first eleven on the eve of the second Test match against the Proteas.

Back in 2002 Sanford was chosen ahead of the two leading Jamaican pacers Jermain Lawson and Darren Powell against the touring Indian team. He shared the supporting role with the Barbadian left arm pacer Pedro Collins (the half-brother of Fidel Edwards the previously unknown) and grabbed 15 wickets (fifteen). He faltered against the touring New Zealanders, the major excuse would lie on the slowness of the pitches especially at the Queen’s Park ground in Grenada. I am confident that Adam Sanford has learnt to adjust to the flatter surfaces that are prevalent in both the Test and limited overs and would be around for a long time even though he has to serve as a lawman.
