Boynes: Sports will beat crime
Minister of Sport Roger Boynes has said, Government is going to work closely with the National Sports League to re-capture Trinidad and Tobago from the hands of the criminals. At the time the Toco Member of Parliament was delivering the feature address at the 2003 Nationwide Sports League prize giving ceremony at Gulf City Auditorium. “It is high time we bring back the ole time days and very soon in January officials of my ministry will be meeting with the NSL executive to work out how they can partner the government in reaching every community and to develop community sport in Trinidad and Tobago,”Boynes said. “The government is using sport as their major thrust to combating crime in Trinidad and Tobago and sport would form an integral part in achieving the government’s 2020 vision, which is the same vision of the NSL,” the attorney-at-law said.
Meanwhile San Fernando mayor Ian Atherly was honoured for his contribution to cycling and revealed that sports in San Fernando is about to take off as the government is going to build an ultra-modern sporting facility at Skinner Park. Also delivering an address was president and chief executive officer of the NSL, Lincoln Persad. The hardworking Persad thanked all the corporate sponsors for their contribution to the success of the league and in helping the NSL develop communities through sport. He went on to allude to the investment made by the NSL in developing the Grand Slam Park in Marabella and their efforts to host the Caribbean Windball competition in 2007, just prior to the World Cup. Corporate sponsors who attended the nights proceedings gave their assurance that they will continue to support the league. Govind Boodoosingh representing Carib Brewery said the company is interested in sponsoring the all fours tournaments for the next three years. Also giving sponsorship commitments for 2004 were David Thompson of Hand Arnold limited and Arnold Corneal of Petrotrin.
