THE EDITOR: On Wednesday December 31, I arrived at the Couva shopping complex at about 4.30 pm just as I planned. I decided that I should proceed with my Wednesday plan which was to do some serious studying.
As I arrived at the library to my amazement it was closed. I stopped and thought to myself, well since it is the eve of New Years, and I still owe some gifts to some of my family who live abroad, it wouldn’t hurt taking a look at some of the items at the stores opposite to the library. On Wednesday I usually attend classes which would start at 5 pm. The first store I entered had a lot of gifts but what they did not have was souvenirs, the perfect gift for family that lived abroad. I must say that the workers there were very polite and generous even though I could not find what I was looking for.
While walking towards the other stores I arrived at a very small store. As I entered I said “good evening” and then proceeded to look at the items. Then I saw a woman looking at me with a snarl upon her face. As I walked towards the souvenirs section she kept following me and said, “This is the souvenirs section is that what you are looking for?” I then said politely, “Yes I am.” Most of them were not exactly what I was looking for so I thought a card would be the perfect gift. She kept looking at me all the time. I saw a card which I considered the perfect gift that would say everything. I asked her, “Could you tell me the price of this card please?” To my amazement she said, “You don’t have things to do?” With those words I stepped out and said not a word.
