Indo community also at fault

THE EDITOR:  It takes someone with integrity and courage to apologise and Denise Belfon has demonstrated her class by apologising to the Indian and Hindu community for her obviously unintentional disrespect of the sari. This should not be reason for the Indian community to gloat or show off, because many Indos are the biggest culprits when it comes to disrespecting Indian culture and traditions. The chutney artistes with their vulgar and nonsensical lyrics, their accompanying winer girls in saris and shalwars, and the hordes of Indo young women who play mas wearing their skimpy costumes that could fit in a matchbox while gyrating in the most obscene manner in public, are obvious examples of this.

WARD members were among the first to publicly condemn the songs “Rum Till I Die” and “Dhal Belly Indian” among others. Indeed we have always criticised the “dotishness” that is chutney. Indian males are not to be exempt because many of them use the most obscene language in their daily vocabulary and ill-treat their wives and girlfriends while living off the rum bottle and possessed by the evil spirit of jealousy. The list is long. While we will always attack those who disrespect true Indian culture, the Indian community also needs to clean up their act.

Shivanna Dipnarine, Tara Mungal, Shruti Kissoon, Sharon Zainab, Anna Lisa Basoo and Asha Naphtali for WARD. Women Against Racism and Dictatorship.
