Racing techniques lethal on our roads

THE EDITOR: With respect to the weekly reports of “lost control” vehicular carnage on our roadways, if this letter saves one life, it would have more than justified its ink. The combination of a small diameter steering wheel; the driver’s seat fully back and the driver’s arms fully extended with little or no bend at the elbows looks very macho in popular movies and video games. These techniques are indeed used by trained professional race and rally drivers. The same technique becomes lethal in the hands of village-idiots who figure they were just born-to-drive. The tragedy is that in their drive-to-die, they often kill and maim innocents and leave families devastated. If one driver reads this and corrects his driving posture, then we should have one less fatal accident in 2004.
Best Wishes.
