Triathletes want Chag road repaired

The Trinidad and Tobago Triathlon Association recently launched their 2004 racing calendar at a Pasta Party at Carnetta’s Inn in Maraval. Seven races for kids and adults are carded for the season which begins on February 1 with the first Kids of Steel Duathlon (run/ride/run) and an adult Tri-a Du (Duathlon) at King George V Park at 1.30 pm. President of the Trinidad and Tobago Triathlon Association, Ian Gooding, once again called on the Minister of Transport Franklyn Khan to resurface the roads in Chaguaramas for the races this year. “The circuit around the Chaguaramas Convention Centre, especially Airways Road, is becoming dangerous with potholes,” he said. “Imagine we have to apologise for the Government when we invite triathletes in the Caribbean to race on that road. I have written to Mr Khan about it last year, but nothing ever happened,” Gooding said.

The Kids of Steel (KOS) series will be once again sponsored by the Hilton Kids in the Caribbean Fund, established by Hilton Trinidad general manager Ali Khan. Members of the two triathlon clubs in the country, Rainbow Warriors, with national triathlon champion Jason Gooding as team captain and Caribbean Cross Training, led by former champion Andrew Eligon, attended the launch. Gooding later said that the constitution may have to be amended to change the name of the association to a Federation to include the two clubs and to have representatives of each on the Board of the Federation. “Now that the sport is on the growth path, we would also like to encourage the formation of new clubs across the country,” said Gooding. “We plan to take a team of about 35 triathletes to compete in Grenada on April 24 and 25. Plus we will be looking to develop national teams in all age groups. “We are still on the hunt for sponsors for our events, since we are hearing nothing about our subvention request from the Ministry of Sport for this year,” he said.
