Grenada PM wants W/Cup 2007 semi-final
ST GEORGE’S: Grenada’s Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell is aiming at big match status for his country at Cricket World Cup 2007. Dr Mitchell said he expects Grenada to win the staging of at least a semi-final match when bids are assessed and match venues decided. “We have an extremely good chance to get certainly at least a semi-final game, depending on how we proceed, I think that’s where we need the whole country involved,” Dr Mitchell said. Grenada is one of 13 countries bidding to stage matches in CWC 2007.
Dr Mitchell said the country’s World Cup committee has been working with consultants and Ministry of Sports on a plan to improve the stadium but he emphasised that there are other critical areas that will be rated in the decision-making process. “It’s not just the facility at Queen’s Park that will determine what kind of game we get, but a number of other factors, security issues, the question of room space in the country, hospitality, the transportation factor, a number of major factors will be involved in the final decision,” he said. The 12 other countries with registered bids are Antigua/Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Guyana, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States.
